Q & A With Warlock Athletics Personal Trainer DJ Scofield
Q: Where did you go to College and what do you have a degree in?
A: SUNY Cortland and my degree is in Exercise Science!
Q: What sports did you play?
A: I played soccer, baseball and ran track
Q: At a varsity level in high school? at Collegiate level?
A: I played soccer and ran track in high school and played baseball through High School and in College at Dutchess. I played for a bunch of travel teams along the way along with an endless number of tournaments up and down the east coast.
Q: So clearly you loved sports, how did you get into weight lifting and fitness outside of sports?
A: I stated lifting weights in high school because I wanted to gain muscle for my sports. That led me to get more involved in fitness. I started researching about fitness on my own,  then went to college for Exercise Science. Throughout my college career I became more interested in the personal training side of exercise and took more classes with a focus in training and programming for others. Woo fitness!
Q: It’s kind of a funny story, how did you come across / find Warlock Athletics?
A: Well (haha), it all started when I needed a new pair of khakis. I was driving down Route 55 on my way to the mall when I looked over and saw the Warlock CrossFit sign. I immediately got excited, pulled a U-turn to stop and check it out. I walked straight into Warlock and found Erik and Chris sitting on the rowers. I explained to them how I previously did CrossFit at Cortland and signed up right then and there as a member. After I left I immediately went to the other facility (to remain unnamed) down the street and cancelled my membership 🙂
Q: What do you like best about Warlock Athletics? Why become a trainer here out of all the other facilities?
A: It comes down to the fantastic community inside the facility. The fact that you foster moving better over adding weight. As a personal trainer / professional in the fitness world it’s so appreciated to put form first and not just say that, but actually do it. You also have good programming and I’m not just saying that because you’re the owner haha.
Q: No need to butter me up, you’re already hired! What is your favorite lift and why?
A: Snatch! It’s my favorite because of the complexity of the movement . It took me a long time to become efficient in the snatch, so it feels great when I know I have completed the lift with adequate form.
Q: How many days per week do you train?
A: I try and keep it at five days per week with two rest days. Sometimes it turns into six days per week with one rest day, depending on what I have to work on.
Q: What is your 3 month goal?
A: Rev up my front squat and jerk game.
Q: Let’s put a number to that “rev up the front squat and jerk game”.  If you were 60 telling your grandkids how strong you were, what number would you be happy telling them?
A: I’ll most likely tell them I lifted so much more than I did and that they have a lot to live up to! haha If I had to pick numbers it would be 350 for a front squat and a 300 lb jerk!
Q: When it comes to clients, what do you focus on with them?
A: I focus on the goals of my clients. If they want to build strength, I will program strength. If mobility is their goal, then I program mobility. Either way, I will always have a focus on form and technique with my clients.
Q: Here’s the million dollar question, why should someone train with you instead of going somewhere else?
A: I’m extremely attentive to the individual goals and needs of my clients. I am also a huge advocate of proper technique before adding insane intensity to training. Trainees will learn how to move efficiently while reaping the benefits of fitness. Plus, I like to motivate people and have fun!
Q: We’ve done lots of talking about the gym, box. Let’s learn a little about you outside the gym. What is your favorite cheat meal?
A:  Definitely cheesecake with bacon on the side.
Q: What is your favorite movie?
A: LOTR. Lord of the Rings. All of them. Forever.
Q: What is your favorite show?
A: Doctor Who, followed by Buffy.
Q: What do you like to do outside of Warlock Athletics?
A: Read books, watch Netflix, go to diners with my friends.
Q: Lastly do you have any advice for athletes?
A: I would learn the movements to perfection first, then start worrying about weight. It makes life much, much easier! I would also say, work as hard as you can and you’ll reach your goals.
